He has to sort of his feelings of anger at his father, who places the burden of the neighborhood on his shoulders. This places the emphasis on Miles’ character growth. For the bulk of the story, Miles is focused on surviving his history teacher–and his parents’ disappointment.

The superhero business, though? That’s mostly relegated to the end. And, okay, he also wants to tell his crush how he feels. Miles just wants to get good grades and graduate.

Rather, it is a coming-of-age story set in a Brooklyn high school. Ironically, I think Miles Morales really works as a superhero novel because, in many ways, it is not a superhero novel at all. Miles Morales, however, proves an engrossing read. Translated into pages of prose, they are even more boring than when they are presented in visuals. Something about the format just does not work. What good is a hero who can’t even graduate? His Spider-Man powers have been acting up and he was just suspended from school for walking out of class to use the restroom.
